DNR prescribed burns set in Calumet and Manitowoc counties
|
GREEN BAY – Wisconsin Department of Natural
Resources staff plans to conduct prescribed burning on properties in Calumet
and Manitowoc County in the coming weeks if appropriate weather conditions
exist.
Prescribed burning is part of ongoing
efforts to preserve and restore the landscape found within DNR properties
throughout Wisconsin. These burns reduce leaf litter, improve wildlife habitat,
redistribute nutrients and help control invasive species. Burning is
planned at the following DNR managed properties:
- Brillion State Wildlife Area
- Collins Marsh State Wildlife Area
- Killsnake State Wildlife Area
- High Cliff State Park
The window for conducting prescribed
burns is relatively small due to the special weather conditions required. The
moisture level of groundcover, relative humidity and wind speed and direction
must be just right for a safe, successful burn. Based on these factors planned
burns may or may not occur. Local police and fire officials are notified when
and where burns will take place.
