SPORT FISHING REPORT FROM THE DNR AND ROGER'S OUTDOOR NEWS

Northern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: April 4, 2018
Kewaunee Co.
·         Kewaunee- There was a consistent amount of catch along Kewaunee River late in the week and weekend. The pier and shore have seen little action. The Kewaunee Ramp had opened on the 20th for the first day of spring, but a thin layer of ice is now forming early in the morning making it tough on boats. At the beginning of the week the Kewaunee River off of E was mostly frozen. It cleared up by the end of the weekend and is now open. There have been no catches reported. The Kewaunee River is shallow around Devil’s Bend, and the steadiest work for steelhead has been around the south side of the bridge near Besadny using both wax worms and spawn. 7-10 lb rainbows were caught at the Horseshoe mid and late week. Monday evening’s drizzle did not carry on to Tuesday as expected, and a crowded holiday spooked the trout around footbridge. There was decent brown trout fishing on the Lake with water reported at 35 F and the best luck on red and white color.
·         Algoma - The Algoma Ramp was busy mid-week with anglers catching 19”- 24” brown trout. The mornings were calm though an east wind would frequently pick up in the evenings. The Forestville Dam has refrozen. As of the weekend, both the Ahnapee River and Stoney Creek are open. Stoney Creek has ice and snow flanking its sides and the water is low. Steelhead are able to swim upstream making it easy to sight fish. There has been good luck with fly rods using both spawn and beads. The most success was had in the pools right before S and parallel to Kennedy. The mouth of Stoney was reported at 34F. There were very little brown catches off of the Ahnapee and X. Steelhead anglers took in rainbows late in the week off the Ahnapee and W. Main Street using spawn. Folks are looking for a strong rain and turbid waters come mid-April.
Green Bay Fishing Report: April 4, 2018
·         Locations from Duck Creek up to Geano’s Beach are mostly still ice covered with patchy open water. No anglers were observed at any of these locations on the two days that were surveyed (Friday and Saturday).
·         Fox River – Water temperatures have been staying relatively cool, approximately 41-44°F, which in turn has been keeping the walleyes in deeper water. There has still been hundreds of shore anglers and boaters out attempting to catch a trophy walleye. Fairgrounds and Fox Point saw high numbers of boaters on the warmest days, along with shore anglers at Voyager. Numerous Whitefish have been caught while shore angling at Voyager. Due to the high size limit the few walleyes that were caught were then released.
·
·         MANITOWOC COUNTY:   Sucker run has not really started as of yet, but once the warmer weather and some rain comes, should make the run happen.  Steelheads are coming up stream a little right now, but like the suckers, still slow fishing. Fishermen are showing up at the EAST TWIN and WEST TWIN rivers near the dams. In Mishicot you will find fishermen along the park side of the EAST TWIN and downstream from the Fire Station.
