La Farge teen
wins statewide award for bat conservation
Ansel
Brenneman of La Farge received the Outstanding Achievement in Youth
Citizen-based Monitoring Award at the recent Wisconsin Summit for
Natural Resources Volunteers in Eau Claire. Ansel, a student at Laurel
High School in Viroqua, champions bat monitoring by volunteering and
giving public talks to get others involved. He started bat monitoring in
2016 as part of an 8th grade school project. Since then, he’s volunteered
to count bats at their roosts and to monitor them with acoustic
detectors, he's assisted while DNR staff have captured and
processed bats, and he's been building bat houses. Thank you Ansel
for all you do for bats!
Time to build
bat houses
Bats are emerging from
hibernation in caves and mines, and migrating back from overwintering
sites in the south. Bats are deciding where to spend the summer and
exploring sites, so right now is a great time to put up a bat
house. Find a supply list, instructions, and videos to build a bat
house. it's a great project for this weekend's wintry
weather. Get started.
