Wisconsin
On March 20, Secretary of Interior Ryan Zinke will be in Wisconsin to
announce the disbursement of the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson
grants to the states. This year the grants total over $1.1 billion.
Wisconsin will be receiving a check for $34,966,603.
Background on
Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson grants:
Pittman-Robertson grants are funded by hunting license sales and an excise
tax on long guns, hand guns, ammunition and archery equipment. It is
paid by hunters, manufacturers, producers, and importers and applies to all
commercial sales and imports, whether their purpose is hunting, sport shooting,
or personal defense.
Dingell-Johnson grants are funded from fishing licenses and a
manufacturers’ excise taxes on sport fishing equipment, import duties on
fishing tackle, yachts and pleasure craft and a portion of the gasoline
fuel tax attributable to small engines and motorboats.
Both grants are distributed to states on a yearly basis via a formula. The
grants must be used by the state’s fish and game department, require a
match of 25% non-federal sources and can be used for management of wildlife/habitat
and many other conservation and recreation related projects.
