OUTDOOR NEWS:  The Statewide Youth Turkey Hunt is the weekend of April 15 and 16 which is just a week away. Turkeys have moved out of their overwinter flocks with a few Toms already displaying in the fields. Shed hunters are out and about and the elk will soon be shedding antlers as well. Migration continues strong across the state. Large flocks of birds of all species have been traveling through the state on their way to their nesting areas. As you drive around the county, you will see flocks or pairs of geese and sandhill cranes in the fields. A word of caution to all drivers, this week on one night I had 7 deer cross in front of me as I was driving to the sportsmen club meetings. I had 4 try to run down my van and on the way home again, I had three more try the same thing. Funny to mention this, these deer were on the normal trails where they are during hunting season. So please drive very carefully this spring, no one wants to hit any animals with their vehicle.

Mark your calendars for April 23^rd as the Friends of the Branch River would like to invite all of you to the Manitowoc Public Library at 12:30pm. They will be hosting the Fox Valley Herp Club upstairs in the Balkansky Rooms B and C. The group will do a short presentation on reptiles and then the fun starts with lots of hands-on interaction with the many snakes, turtles and other reptiles big and small. There will also be some treats from the Cravings in Whitelaw afterwards. This is a FREE FAMILY EVENT, but donations are strongly encouraged to help support the group. They will also have information about getting involved in the group and/or becoming a member. This organization is all about getting the whole family involved and the things they have for the children to do is just wonderful. They are also offering a summer camp scholarship to 12-17 year olds through Maritime Museum – Watershed Ambassadors Summer Camp. This requires a membership and some volunteer work with us. The week-long camp is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Do not forget to support this group by attending their April 29^th Brat Fry at Rob’s Market on Menasha Ave. next to the Airport and it should be starting around 9:30 till after noon hour sometime. This is one of their ways to raise the so badly needed money to run a program for children and the group. FISHING NEWS:   The spring Walleye runs are picking up on the rivers. Even with some spots in Northern Wis. still having ice on the lakes, it is rotting and turning black and should be considered very dangerous with anglers falling through the ice in some counties. The Walleye run is picking up in the Peshitgo, Menominee and Wolf rivers and fishermen are flocking to the shores of the peak run. Fishing in the Wis. River had been good this past week with the walleyes just about at spawn stage and numerous fish being caught below the dams. There are a few sturgeon on the Wolf River, but the water temperatures are still too cold for their annual spawning run. By the way, the Wis. DNR is looking for individuals who are willing to babysit the sturgeon during their spawning runs. Contact the DNR service offices to ask about being a sturgeon watcher, as I did that for many years and it’s fun to watch them at all hours of the day and night. Fishing in the Door County area is improving as the spring temps warm the area. On the Bay side of the county, there is still some spots with ice in the harbors, but the Sawyer Harbor ramp was open and busy with most boats catching 2 or 3 browns.  Along the Lake Michigan shorelines the rivers are showing some signs of a mixed bag of steelheads. The Sheboygan River and the Kewaunee County streams have been producing a few steelheads and the occasional brown trout. Fishing pressure on the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Root Rivers was lower this past week but the pressure on the Oak Creek was heavy with some nice catches of rainbows landed. Fishing in that Oak Creek area is really good for browns also at this time of the season. East and West Twin Rivers have had a few fishermen trying their luck on the steelhead and I have seen only a few fish caught. Hopefully this coming week will be good with the weather warming up the water a bit.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), not related to local animal shelters with similar names, has the same goals as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals); Get rid of Meat, Cheese, Ice Cream, Circuses, Zoos, Aquariums. Pet Stores, HUNTING and basically any other way animals are used commercially or institutionally. The CEO of HSUS, Wayne Pacelle, has said, “I don’t want to see another cat or dog born.”  ( Editor’s Note: The animals rights groups in America have collected over $500 Million Dollars in 2016 to fight the rest of the world on Animals have Rights. Most of these people are Liberals to the max. )

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY  will be on September 23^rd, 2017 this year. There should be events all around the state celebrating the NHF Day. Watch for the events in this county and please note that this year the Manitowoc County Fish & Game Prot. Assn. will be celebrating their 110^th Anniversary and is the leader in Conservation in these parts of the state and the Mid-West. If you are not a member of the many clubs in this county yet, sign up to a club of your choice. As an example, the Manitowoc Unit of the Fish & Game has a $5.00 a year membership and any children until 12 are half that price. You can’t purchase a burger today in some places for that price. Come join a club and see a whole new world that most children today know nothing about. Let’s get them back in the outdoors and not in front of the TV set. OUTDOOR NEWS:  ATTENTION ALL DEER HUNTERS:  Almost all of you know how hard the County Deer Advisory Council (CDAC) of Manitowoc County has been working to figure out our Deer hunting seasons and the amount of deer to kill. Please go to the on-line feedback “survey” to fill it out and get involved in the amount of deer taken in Manitowoc county. The on-line survey started on April 3^rd to the 13^th. Go to: “ Spring 2017 CDAC Input”  and once it opens, go to “online public comment forum.”  On April 14^th the public should be able to see the results of the survey.  Do not forget that the CDAC meeting will be held at the Viking Bow & Gun Club on April 19^th starting at 6pm. OUTDOOR NEWS:  The Westshore Sportsman Club will be starting a Youth Shooting Program with an organizational meeting to be held near the end of April. Watch the paper or this blog site for more information in the future. Westshore is also holding its 8^th Annual Kakuk Memorial Shoot for a Cure fundraiser on April 8^th from 11am to 3pm or longer if need be. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society Relay for Life. Westshore Sportsman Club is located at 11267 Lakeshore Road, Off of State Highway V, Two Rivers, WI. Next meeting for the Manitowoc County CDAC group will be on April 19^th at the Viking Bow & Gun Club starting at 6 pm. This is the last year of the three year plan to reduce the deer population in the county. The CDAC group voted in its March meeting to issue the same number of tags for both the public and private lands in the county like last year. There will be two FREE Antlerless deer tags with each license sold and an additional 2,000 Antlerless tags available for the private lands and 300 Antlerless tags for the public lands.  The purpose of the April 19^th meeting is to hear from the public on the recommendations the CDAC group made at their March meeting. Please, if you care about our deer populations in this county, be at the April meeting. See you there.

Maribel Sportsman Club is going to be holding an ATV course on Monday April 24^th, Wed. 26th and Wed. May 3^rd., all from 5:30pm to 9 pm. Cost is $10 per student and anyone born January 1, 1988 or after, needs to have this course to ride on public trails. Pre-registration is required by calling John Decker at 920-242-0278.

Larrabee Sportsman Club is having their Easter Egg Hunt at Noon April 8^th for kids 6 and younger and at 1 pm for the youth ages 7 to 13 years old. Entertainment will be by Don Vogt. The magician and a special appearance by Mr. Whiskers the Easter Bunny.  The Club also has added another spawning bed in Haupt’s Lake to help improve the fish habitat.

ATTENTON ALL SPORTSMEN, DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE CONSERVATION CONGRESS PUBLIC SPRING HEARINGS ON APRIL 10^TH AT THE MANITOWOC COUNTY UW CENTER STARTING AT 7 PM.

PETA:  PETA is now claiming that “Milk is a symbol of White Supremacy.” PETA’S shenanigans vary from the absurd to the downright offensive. PETA’s efforts to “save the animals” always make the headlines—and with good reason: they’re completely absurd. The Animal Rights group released a new video to cry over milk, equating the nutritious drink with NAZISM. “Did you know that milk has long been a symbol used by white supremacists”? It’s an alternative fact accompanied by equally ludicrous video, which they published on social media. They call milk the neo-Nazi drink of choice, stating that it has “long been” a symbol used by white supremacist groups as a “thinly veiled allegory for racial purity.  Read this in an email to me on April 2, 2017 from Liberty Headlines.

ATTENTION ALL DEER HUNTERS, the April Public Comment period will provide an opportunity to give feedback regarding preliminary antlerless harvest quota recommendations.
