OUTDOOR NEWS:   NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS  VOL. 24  #8:   Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals Ignores Heller: NO Protection for Guns it deems “Dangerous.” Many of the lower courts have been Making up their own rules when it come to the Second Amendment. Many of these lower courts had Obama hand-picked Judges placed on the benches and they are refusing to follow the U.S. Supreme Court rulings in Heller and McDonald cases, which shows that the fight for your gun rights are still very real. The 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that America’s most popular types of rifles, banned in the State of Maryland, have NO Second Amendment protection.  AMICUS BRIEFS filed in Support of Petition for Supreme Court Review in Peruta Right-to-Carry Case by the California Rifle and Pistol Assn., which seeks to confirm that the Second Amendment protects the right to carry a firearm for self-defense.  LAST CHANCE!  Urge your Senators to confirm Ryan Zinke for Secretary of the Interior. FISHING NEWS:  Well the fishing on the Fox River this past week was really good with over 100 boats on the river. I witness three pontoons near the river’s mouth fishing by the yacht club and power plant. Most of the boats were near the Hwy 172 bridge to Voyageur Park. Fishing in Southeastern Wis, the fishermen were getting catches of Coho Salmon and brown and rainbow trout near the Milwaukee Harbor and in Oak Creek. If you are fishing near the Oak Creek area, browns are being taken by just about everyone. Of course, now that the snow and colder weather came back, who will know what has been going on down there this weekend. During the warmer weather, walleyes were being taken on Lake Wisconsin. Anglers at Geano Beach reported several pike and 30 fish registered at a tournament last week Saturday. Along Door County, anglers fishing in Little Sturgeon were reporting about 14-16 inches of ice, but the warmer temps since then, has broken up most of the ice. It’s no longer safe to be on any ice. For the third day the Sturgeon Spearers did not report any fish speared, mainly because no one is spearing anymore due to the ice being gone. So it pretty much ends the 2017 Sturgeon Spearing Season. Totals will be coming out later on this week. Fishermen have been on the East and West Twin Rivers this past week, I haven’t heard of anything being taken yet, but I have to hand it to the younger boys I see down there trying to catch something. Those boys are the true fishermen of the future. Good Luck boys!

STURGEON SPEARING UPDATE:  The 2017 sturgeon spearing season on Lake Winnebago and the Upriver Lakes may not be officially close until Sunday, but Mother Nature made a strong case otherwise on Friday.  Friday marked the second consecutive day that 0 sturgeon were harvested on the Winnebago system. With all the ice floats piling up on the shores, I would be safe saying not too many more sturgeon will be speared. The total amounts of sturgeon taken will be released on either Sunday or Monday this week.

OUTDOOR NEWS:   Here is a list of upcoming Gun Shows that Bruce Grossheim supplied to me.  March 5th  at the Swan Club, sponsored by the Fort Onieda Muzzle Loaders;  and one at the Fond du Lac County Fairgrounds April 8th and 9th sponsored by the Wis. Gun Collectors. Sat. from 8am to 5pm and Sunday from 8am to 3pm. No better time than now to stock up on firearms the way the liberals are acting in America, and the way some states that are run by Democrats are drawing up firearm laws against all owners or taxing them to death to pay for the debts they are running up to help those too lazy to help themselves.( This writer’s opinion only)

Roger's Outdoor Notes

FISHING NEWS:   As I was driving over the Fox River Tuesday morning by Hwy 172, the river was starting to fill up with fishermen from the park in De Pere to the bridge. Bruce Grossheim reports that the walleyes were hitting there. I spoke to fishermen who were fishing near the mouth of the river and had some luck, but nothing to bring home. The 28” length is in effect March 1st and the limit is still 5 fish.  Ice conditions on the Bay is getting very dangerous in spots, so no more vehicles or ATV’s on the ice. In fact, if you really care about your life, stay off the ice please. We all need your help to protect our Outdoors from those who continue to try to stop all sportsmen and women from enjoying our sport. If you have to go onto the ice, please be careful.

Largest fish taken today was a 132.2 pounds and registered at Calumet Harbor. Starting Monday the 20th, only 3 registration stations will be open. Stockbridge Harbor will be one and the DNR Asylum Bay Fisheries HQ will be for Lake Winnebago and Critter’s will be for the Upriver Lakes. FISHING NEWS:  Saturday’s Sturgeon Spearing day ended with a total of 31 fish taken. 20 of them from Lake Winnebago and 11 from the Upriver Lakes. With the drop in harvest the last few days it looks like we will have our first 16 day season on the Upriver Lakes. The fishing season is at the ½ way point as of today and many of the fishermen have called it a season due to the ice conditions, but there is still a number of diehard spears still looking to fill their tags. DNR pilots was up in the air today for an aerial shanty count and there were still 826 shanties on Lake Winnebago this morning and another 90 on the Upriver Lakes.

FISHING NEWS:    Open water fishermen were seen this week on the Menominee River below the Hatti Street Dam trying for walleye and whitefish. A few open water anglers were casting spoons on the Fox River at Voyageur Park but success has been slow. On Green Bay, perch and whitefish were being caught in good numbers at Long Tail and Little Tail points, where a few walleyes were also being caught. Little Sturgeon and Sherwood areas were reporting mostly whitefish with perch being taken at Sawyer Harbor. Lake Winnebago is showing signs of the ice breaking up, even though there is about a 12 to 20 inch base. Warm temps this weekend will end most ice fishing for everyone but those up north. In Central Wisconsin the trout streams are wide open but high and murky making for tough catch and release fishing conditions.  As for the Sturgeon Spearing season, today the harvest of 44 fish with 28 of them on Lake Winnebago and 16 from the Upriver Lakes. Stockbridge Harbor was the busiest station with 11 fish registered.  Once again there was only three sturgeon over 100 lbs registered today. One at Quinney, One at Calumet Harbor and one at Boom Bay.

FISHING NEWS:  Well today marked the 5th day of Sturgeon Spearing and the totals are as follows:  They harvested 32 fish from Lake Winnebago and 18 fish from the Upper Lakes. They are currently at 67% of both the male and female harvest caps and would need a harvest of either 22 adult females or 54 males to reach the 90% trigger that would close the fishery the next day. Five more fish over the 100lbs was registered and it looks like the number of 5 is holding on for the larger fish. Remember, with the warmer temps this weekend, please use extreme caution when out on any ice. I don’t want to have to report a death of a fisherman because he refused to use good common sense and not go out on the ice. No fish is worth your life, a very dollars will buy a fish at the fish market.

2016 Lake Michigan sportfishing harvest highest since 2012

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- Lake Michigan anglers reported significantly improved results for many species in 2016, reeling in nearly 385,000 salmon and trout, including the third highest number of coho salmon since 1992.
"During much of 2016, favorable weather and water temperatures helped produce solid results and we are pleased to see anglers benefit from ongoing efforts to provide a diverse and balanced fishery," said Brad Eggold, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Great Lakes district fisheries supervisor. "While the chinook harvest showed healthy increases over the past two years, coho salmon proved to be the big story with more than 125,000 fish harvested."
DNR sport fishing surveys show that anglers who launch their own boats from ramps or marinas or invest in a charter trip are harvesting the majority of fish on Lake Michigan.
DNR sport fishing surveys show that anglers who launch their own boats from ramps or marinas or invest in a charter trip are harvesting the majority of fish on Lake Michigan.
Photo Credit: DNR
Highlights from DNR's 2016 survey of anglers on Lake Michigan include:
  • An overall salmon and trout harvest of 384,908 fish, up 43 percent from the 269,978 taken in 2015. This marks the highest catch since 590,210 fish were harvested in 2012;
  • A chinook harvest of 139,082 fish, up 22 percent from 113,973 in 2015;
  • A coho harvest of 125,964, up 207 percent from 41,010;
  • A rainbow trout harvest of 76,846, up 30 percent from 59,106;
  • A brown trout harvest of 23,879, up 18 percent from 20,174;
  • A lake trout harvest of 19,137, down 46 percent from 35,715.
The improved results came even as anglers decreased their effort to 2.63 million hours from last year's 2.73 million hours, about 1 percent below the five-year average. The harvest rate increased to 0.1464 fish per hour, up slightly (2.17 percent) from the five-year average.
Factoring in other species such as northern pike, walleye, smallmouth bass and yellow perch, the 2016 harvest totaled 557,375. Among the other fish, walleye accounted for the single largest target species at 78,440 fish, a 21 percent decrease from 99,302 in 2015. Smallmouth bass saw the greatest increase to 16,880 fish, up 79 percent from 9,422 in 2015.
Over the last 15 years, sport fishing surveys show that boat anglers are harvesting the majority of fish on Lake Michigan. Anglers who launched their own boats from ramps or marinas or invested in a charter trip were the most successful. The sport harvest from ramps and marinas totaled 395,549 fish, while charter captains helped clients bring in 112,150 fish
