FISHING NEWS:   FISHING in the lakeshore was going very well during the holiday weekend. Do not forget that the CUB Radio Sport Fishing reports are now on the air every Friday and Saturday mornings with Capt. Bruce Grossheim. If you want the up to the minute fishing reports, remember to tune in Capt. Bruce and listen to the reports. Lots of boats using the ramps in the lakeshore with most boaters being able to catch 5 or more fish within a couple of hours. Some of the reports showed boaters getting more than 10 fish within a few hours. Most of the fish caught were steelhead ad King salmon. Most of the fish caught and examined had no fin clips, which implies they were natural and not planted fish. Steelhead averaged about 9 lbs. and also had a few fin clips. In the Algoma area and Kewaunee area they were bringing in mixed bags of rainbows, chinooks and cohos. Flasher/fly combos in green and similar colors worked well for the chinook, flashy spoons in the top 30fow worked best for rainbows, and some anglers has success with red/orange dodgers and small flies for cohos. In the Algoma area they were also getting their limits of Brown Trout.  In the Door County area, fishermen were getting some smallmouths, northerns, perch, and walleyes. Nothing like a full mixed bag of fishing up on the bay and lake side of Door County.

FREE FISHING WEEKEND this weekend June 3rd and 4th. Everything is free and the only thing the state asks you to do is follow the laws to fishing. If you do that, you will have the most wonderful time of your life, and now would be a good time to take a charter out of Lake Michigan with the whole family. Only cost will be the Charter, no licenses needed.  Do not forget that National Fishing and Boating week runs from June 3rd to the 11th and most Wal-Mart stores will be hosting “REEL FUN EVENTS” in over 1, 600 participating Wal-Mart stores across the country, so visit TakeMeFishing.org.

OUTDOOR NEWS:   The 2016 River Otto and Fisher harvest information is now available. Trappers harvested 1,474 river otters and 546 fishers according to the preliminary harvest data for the 2016-17 season. River Otters were taken in 72 counties and fishers were taken in 42 counties during the season. Tribal harvest accounted for 22 fisher and 13 otter. River otter and fisher are both members of the weasel family. The DNR rely on detailed harvest records, track surveys, and available information gained by examining the ages of animals that are trapped. Due to their generally secretive nature, the DNR really rely on information gained through highly-regulated and monitored trapping seasons.

FISHING NEWS:   Well, fishing in the county has been a little hard with all that rain we are having now. A lot of fishermen were kept off the lake due to the weather, but hopefully this weekend will prove to be a different story. Reports show that the water temps are about 45-F. Very few anglers are fishing on the West and East Twin Rivers for steelheads, and I have been seeing some out there all day. Reports from the Milwaukee area show that the salmon are on the move and coming northward. Brown trout in the southern half of the state are starting to come around, close to shore for the fishermen. Some of the boats in the Sheboygan area were getting a few rainbows and coho salmon this past week. Mixed bags of chinook and lakers were being caught. I hope many of you had a chance to see all the huge smallmouth bass taken last weekend during the tournament. Remember to listen to the CUB RADIO SPORT FISHING REPORTS with Capt. Bruce starting this Friday at 6:20 am and listen to the reports all holiday weekend. Do not forget that on June 3 and 4th is the FREE FISHING WEEKEND, with everything free and the only thing you need to remember is to follow all State Laws for fishing. Good Luck to all fishermen and women and the kids too.

ATTENTION ALL ILLINOIS GUN OWNERS !!!!   Illinois lawmakers are now considering Senate Bill 1657, a far reaching regulatory scheme aimed at firearms retailers that critics call "dangerous" an attempt to drive gun dealers out of business. The Illinois House Judiciary Committee has passed SB 1657 earlier this week and it is now on "third reading," which means it could come up for a vote at any moment.  This legislation, according to its critics, adds mountains of red tape for Prairie State Firearms dealers on top of the regulations already enforced by the Federal BATFE.  All gun owners are requested to call their state representatives about this legislation. To find your lawmaker, visit the " Illinois State Rifle Association's" website.

FISHING NEWS:   Fishing on the Bay has kept fishing pressure low due to the high winds out of the northeast and many anglers still went out. Anglers that braved the winds found walleyes looking for warmer waters. Anglers reported catching walleye and smallmouth bass out of the Oconto Breakwater Harbor. In the southern Bay, most anglers were catching multiple harvestable walleyes as well as white bass and freshwater drum. Fishermen have been having some success fishing the Flambeau River for walleye and bass. Some northern pike, walleye and smallmouth bass were being caught on the Oconto, Peshtigo and Menominee rivers. Last week the fishing pressure was a little high due to the tournaments in Sturgeon Bay over the weekend. Targets were Smallmouth Bass but a few fishermen were looking also for walleyes.  Rainbows are finishing up spawning but are still holding in some of the Door County streams, likely waiting for warm water to force them back into the lake. In the southern part of the lake near Milwaukee is showing signs of alewives starting to show up along the shorelines and the seagulls are diving in for them.

FISHING REPORT:   The inland fishing this past week was very good according to the reports from the DNR, with Trout streams. Some lake anglers reported water temperatures were still cool keeping fishing slower, but walleye anglers across the north and on Green Bay found good success with many boats coming back to the dock with fish. There are reports that the bluegills are biting on area lakes and crappie fishing was starting to heat up on some of the smaller lakes in central Wisconsin. Fishing on Lake Michigan was slow mainly due to the large waves and strong winds off the lake. There have been small craft warnings for the last few days over the past couple of weeks. Alewives have moved in along shorelines and some rivers with cormorants and terns diving to feed on them.  Bass fishermen in the Sturgeon Bay area found some good luck, but once again the high winds blew the guys off the water. Lake Winnebago system reported a fairly short sturgeon run on the Upper Fox and Wolf Rivers this spring. Sturgeon were again spotted spawning a second time on location on the Wolf River during the last week of April. This year during the second spawn run, fisheries crew tagged an additional 46 fish.

Woodland Dunes is Kayaking For the Birds

Two Rivers – Nancy Nabak, representative of Woodland Dunes, will be kayaking down the West Twin River with DNR avian ecologist, Sumner Matteson, on Tuesday, May 23rd to support bird conservation initiatives in the state of Wisconsin. The two will be participating in the Great Wisconsin Birdathon to raise funds for the Natural Resources Foundation. Nabak is also promoting the development of a new canoe/kayak trail system between the West and East Twin Rivers.

“The partnership makes total sense to us. The new canoe/kayak trail offers birders and other outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to enjoy the softer side of nature by water,” said Nabak, who hopes to raise $1,000 to support the Foundation.  She and Matteson will be documenting all the bird species they find while kayaking from Shoto to Veteran’s Park. Documenting the bird species will help scientists learn about trends, bird behaviors, and overall health of ecosystems.

Two Rivers City Manager, Greg Buckley, is supporting the team and living up to his mantra, “Turning our face back to the water.” Buckley stated that nature-based tourism is good for the local economy and hopes the implementation of a water trail system will draw other birders and visitors to the area. Birding has become a billion dollar tourism industry in recent years.

The trail will eventually have designated launch and landing sites, signage to show places of interest to stop along the way, and a website.

OUTDOOR NEWS:   WISCONSIN HUNTER EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR ASSN. (WHEIA) held their conference on May 6th at the Holiday Inn in Fond du Lac, WI. WHEIA and the Dept. of Natural Resources (DNR) put on the 2017 Hunter Education Training Conference and Instructor Recognition Banquet. WHEIA was originally formed to help all instructor across the State and it still amazes me that more instructors do not belong to this great group, who’s only goals are to make teaching hunter education better through-out the years. I’m going to take a few comments from the program they handed out to everyone there. In it are some real interesting notes. The WHEIA group operates pellet gun ranges in Richfield, Mosinee, Rothschild, Sun Prairie and Green Bay. For the past several years they have staffed Hunter Education information booths at events in Madison, Rothschild, Green Bay and Milwaukee. The only way they can support themselves is through raffle sales, so the next time you are seeing them, please purchase some of the raffle tickets, and that will help them. This group is made up of volunteer instructors from the whole state, and if you are an instructor, do you belong to WHEIA?  If not, why not? When this group was founded, they would meet in Stevens Point all the time, and the members at that time had none of the easy ways to communicate with each other like today. We only had U.S. Mail, land-lines and fax machines, unlike today with computers, cell phones and internets.  With about 4,151 instructors in the state, there are only about 250 members in WHEIA. WHY? All 4,151 instructors should belong to the group. Of those 4,151 instructors they have offered around 1,100 Hunter Ed, Internet field days, Archery classes, and adult test out. Hunter Education Group of the Year goes to Waupaca Hunter Education Group. They offered a variety of classes for the public to include field days, traditional Hunter Education classes and also members of their group offered Trapper Education as well. A total of 488 students were offered certification in 2016.  Instructor of the year was Chris Wunrow represents a small area of Wisconsin and he continues to do more even when he doesn’t have to. According to John King Hunter Education Administrator, Chris goes up and beyond  in making sure the instructors in his county have the training aids they need to teach hunter education. Congratulations Chris!  And here is the best part of their awards program, three instructors who reached 50 years teaching hunter education for the DNR. They are Michael Noonan of Hazelhurst, Dick Rudolph of Medford, Jack Williams of Horicon, and to George Hanson, from Spooner who completed his 50 years and passed away on February 20, 2017. It shows why Wisconsin leads the country in having the best Hunter Education Instructors in the Unites States.
When I entered the meeting hall, I was met by smiling faces of Hunter Education Instructors of all ages and the number of youth attending shows why Wisconsin is a leader in the field of Hunter Education. They are focusing on having the Jr. Instructors stepping in to continue to teach Hunter Education in the coming years. I noticed a lot of raffle items and the fact that companies from around the country donated to the conference shows how well they approve of the hard work that hunter education instructors are doing today. The meeting started at 9am and they ran a tight ship as far as the schedule goes. They had 10 Jr. instructors present and it was mentioned that older instructors need to hep all Jr. instructors get started to take over for all the older ones.
DNR Warden April Dombrowski gave her report in which she reported that all instructors will need to help and work with the Jr. Instructors and they will need to have a bigger in-put into the program. There will be big changes coming out of the DNR in the next few years and you can expect some big changes in the way Hunter Education will be taught. Within the Law Enforcement Div. of the DNR, some big changes are happening right now. More duties are being placed on the wardens around the state. So watch for these changes, as many are happening right now in this county.
John Plenke, retired DNR Safety Warden & WHEIA Board member discussed what the future will be in teaching Hunter Education. Originally class hours were only 6 hours long and the cost for the class was $3.00. John went on to explain how the classes were when they first started and how they are now. Changes within classes are huge and we all need to be focused on how we teach a class. Without the instructors in this state, there would not be any hunter education today or in the future. The instructor will never be replaced as to a saving of our future in hunting in this country. It’s very important that all instructors go back to a training program and having classes will be longer than 6 hours. Talk was to increase class hours to around 20 to 25 hours, but that is up for discussion. It was also brought up that it would be a wonderful thing to allow those individuals with learning disabilities to take a class and have some one on one training. In some cases, one on one training is needed for some students, and instructors need to be able to provide it. The members were broken up into groups to barn storm ideas on how the classes should be run in the future and what issues need to be included in the classes.

Bob Nack DNR spokesperson for the Deer Management Assistance program (DMAP) spoke to the group about the program. He explained what it is, Why someone would enroll in it, What the DMAP has to offer the landowner(s), Public land eligibility and Participant Contributions. Other speakers were Keith Warnke, DNR Hunting and Shooting Sports Coordinator, Paul Piencilowski-WHEIA Board member, and Doug Kostreva, owner of Horny Buck Seed Company as the Keynote speaker during the Banquet. In closing, if you are a Hunter Education Instructor, do you belong to WHEIA and if not, why not. Join today. Go to: www.WHEIA.com and sign up.

OUTDOOR NEWS:  FATHERS DAY is coming up on June 18th, and here is a perfect gift for that hunter in the family. I guess you could give this to your mother too, but they deserve something even better, mainly for having to put up with you for nine months and always putting you first in her thoughts. I came across a perfect gift called “TAGALONG”  kit. With the way the DNR is changing the rules on tagging your deer this year or turkeys, you really need to have one of these kits.  It really solves the paper license and tag problems we all have experienced. It’s like having a whole new tri-fold wallet, so you can leave your regular wallet at home or in the car, why take the chance of losing your driver’s license or credit cards, lock them up in the car. Pictured is the TagAlong Prime which includes the following items:  One Customized Camo License/Tag holder Wallet, One – Five piece Carabiner tool with scissors,  Six-Custom sized Carcass Tag Bags, and the good part about these is that they are pre-punched holes and zip-locked closure, and six – Orange Twist Ties.  All of this in a really nice wallet. In fact, the wallet is smaller than my leather wallet I use every day. If you want to see more of the products this company has, go to: TagAlongKit.com.  I have a kit for all to see, so ask me the next time to see it. I feel it’s the best items so far this year to come out for the sportsman. Check it out.

FISHING NEWS:  Wisconsin’s general inland game fish season opens this Saturday and fisheries biologists say anglers can expect to find some trophy potential fish as well as abundant numbers of popular game species this year. The Musky season opens on Southern Wisconsin waters while on Northern waters the season opens May 27 to give Musky additional time to complete spawning. Smallmouth bass are also divided into Northern and Southern zones with catch and release only in the North until June 17.  As for the fishing reports for this week it was a bit tough weather wise and the bite was difficult. Rivers across the state are still running high. Trout streams are in the similar shape, but should be in better shape by Saturday.  On the Lake Michigan side of the state, some boaters are landing brown trout, pike and a few walleyes. In the Oconto area they were landing a few smallmouths, northern pikes and a few walleyes. Brown County anglers saw an increase in white bass and freshwater drum, with Door County reporting a slight increase in night walleye bite. Boaters out of Sheboygan and Port Washington saw occasional catches of brown and lake trout. Same can be said about the fishing in the Milwaukee, Racine and Kenosha lake fronts. It looks like the steelhead fishing up and down the lakeshore has dropped off.  DO NOT FORGET THAT THE CUB RADIO SPORT FISHING REPORTS WILL BE STARTING ON MAY 26TH, so tune in for Capt. Bruce’s reports.

FISHING NEWS:   MAY 6TH, THE OPENING DAY OF FISHING INLAND. Fisheries biologists from the DNR say anglers can expect to find some trophy potential fish as well as abundant numbers of popular game species this spring when the general inland fishing season gets underway statewide on Saturday May 6th. While many anglers will use the inland season opener as an opportunity to head out for an extended weekend trip, the success of our urban stocking program also means there will be catchable trout close to home for families and young anglers. Each year more than 1.3 million anglers buy fishing licenses in the state.  The general Wis. fishing season runs from May 6, 2017 to March 4, 2018. To learn more about statewide regulations for fishing and the rules that apply on specific lakes, search “fishing regulations.”   For a complete calendar, search “fishing season date.”

Editor's Note:  U S Rep. John Lewis once again during a speech at a protest of the NRA Annual Meetings in his 5th District of Atlanta refused to call President Trump by name, referring to him as "that man" and saying the NRA is not welcome in his district of Atlanta. Around 71,000 people attended or it could be even more after the totals come out, but here is my feelings on this elected official's comments towards to leader of our Wonderful America. Rep. Lewis like Rep. Maxine Waters of Calif, show their hate towards America, and collected Millions of Dollars in their bank accounts screwing over the very same people they swore to protect and uphold the Constitution for. It's my opinion that most black leaders in Congress are only there to screw over the rest of the people in America handing out FREE items to their kind. One of the Best and most respected Black Men in America is Sheriff David Clarke who uses more common sense than all the blacks in Congress that we all can see. Sheriff Clarke knows what needs to be done in America to make it Great again, and I would throw all my support behind him any day.
