FISHING NEWS:   The fishing this past week has been really hard according to reports across the state. Anglers from Marinette County to Brown County reported numerous attempts at walleye and brown trout. Murkier waters did not help any, but some fishermen were having luck catching northern pike. Brown County fishermen who did have some success catching walleyes noted that the fish were fully spawned and on their way back to the bay. Stream anglers are reporting a difficult steelhead bite in Eastern Door County, suckers have dispersed in Kewaunee county, leaving the steelhead there more visible as temperatures climb upwards.  Water temps range from 40’s to 50’s. Fishing in the Manitowoc County area has been very slow and hopefully this weekend will pick up once the weather warms up again. Fishing south of Manitowoc county in the Port Washington and Milwaukee areas has been so-so for steelheads and brown trout. Let’s all hope this changes in the next few days. EAST and WEST TWIN Rivers has been very slow for both brown trout and steelheads. Not a lot of fishermen in either spot this past week. Do not forget that the CUB Radio Sport Fishing Reports will be starting once again on Memorial Day Weekend Friday May 26th, so tune in to CUB Radio at 980 AM in the mornings. More information will be coming in the coming weeks.

NRA Annual Meetings

This year's meetings are being held April 27-30 in Atlanta, Georgia. One of the highlights each year is the NRA-ILA Leadership Forum. This Year will mark the first time the sitting President has spoken at the Annual Meetings since President Ronald Reagan did so in 1983.

The ILA forum is scheduled to begin at 11:30 CDT on Friday and usually runs anywhere from 3-4 hours. We hope to have a live stream of the event here for your convenience. Otherwise you can go to NRATV to stream from their site. We will have the individual speeches available as quickly as possible. Cable news may carry President Trump's speech live.

The early NRA endorsement was a complete surprise last year. Could this year bring another HUGE surprise in the form of an Executive Order for National Concealed Carry reciprocity? The recent series of NRA ads sure seem to hint at it.

Wisconsin celebrates Forest Appreciation Week this week leading up to Arbor Day on April 28th this Friday. Wisconsin has celebrated Arbor Day since 1883. Wisconsin’s 17.1 million acres of forest provide nearly 65,000 jobs and contribute more than $24 Billion annually to the state’s economy. Because everyone works together at every level from the foresters helping woodland owners plan tree planting to the loggers working with woodland owners to responsibly harvest their woodlot, our woodlands are healthy and sustainable for future generations to enjoy. In honor of Arbor Day, the DNR Div. of Forestry donated about 33,000 tree seedlings to Wisconsin fourth-grade classrooms to commemorate Arbor Day to help young people learn about the important role trees play in Wisconsin’s natural beauty. Wisconsin is second in the nation for TREE CITY USA communities. To see if your community is designated as a TREE CITY USA, go to http://dnr.wi.gov/education/educatorresources/arborDay.html.

OUTDOOR NEWS:   Wisconsin landowners encouraged to look for and control garlic mustard according to the Wis. DNR. Early spring is the best time to check gardens, yards and woodlots for garlic mustard and take measures to control this rapidly spreading invasive plant, state invasive plant experts say. It is very important to control garlic mustard in early spring before the plants flower. Preventing the introduction of seeds and regular scouting are keys to keeping uninfested yards and woodlots free of garlic mustard or other invasive plants. Garlic mustard can alter the composition of forests. Once introduced, it spreads and can dominate the forest floor, displacing native wildflowers, tree seedlings and the wildlife that depend on them. Even mature trees can be impacted as chemicals produced by garlic mustard kills the beneficial fungi that tree roots needs to absorb nutrients. Smaller populations can be contained by hand-pulling all second year plants. Any plants already flowering when pulled need to be removed from the site and carefully disposed of by bagging it and sending it to a landfill. Regulated invasive species are exempt from the rule that bans yard waste in landfills. Herbicides are generally used when sites are too large to hand pull. For more information on garlic mustard and other invasive plants, search the DNR website, dnr.wi.gov, for keyword “invasive”, or contact the local University of Wis. Extension offices or the DNR Service Centers. (Editor’s Note:  I know in my own wood lot I had a lot of garlic mustard found and the forester who was marking my trees pointed out all the garlic mustard in my woods. I spent many hours pulling the plants and bagging them. The biggest problem I found was where the plants grew next to the creek in my woods and they can spread very fast using the waterways as a means of spreading. In areas where I had a hard time getting to all the plants, I sprayed Roundup on the whole forest floor as per the DNR directions. If in doubt, ask a DNR staff member for help.)

With 80,000 turkey hunters headed into the field on April 19th, the DNR says there is two key factors needed for a safe turkey hunt. The two most critical ingredients for a successful spring hunt are a detailed hunting plan in one hand and a firm grip on the firearm safety in the other. DNR statistics show 80% of accidents during turkey hunting seasons involve hunters mistaking other hunters for game, or hunters failing to positively identify their target. The other 20% of accidents are self-inflicted, usually the result of violating one of the four firearm safety rules.  It’s a good idea to wear a blaze orange cap or gloves while walking. And find a hunting spot that allows you to rest your back against a tree or some other object that is as wide as your shoulders. This helps protect you from not only an errant shot, but from the good vision of the turkey. Never stalk a wild turkey and don’t try to approach closer than 100 yards to a gobbler. The chances of getting close enough for a shot are slim, but the chances of becoming involved in an accident are increased. The less you move the safer and more effective you will be in the field. FOLLOW THESE SIMPLE RULES FOR A SAFE AND SUCCESSFUL TURKEY HUNT:  #1. Identify your target; it’s not good enough to take a shot when a hunter only thinks they are seeing a legal target;  #2. Do not shoot at sound and movement;  #3. Be certain of your target, and what’s in front of it and beyond it;  #4. Avoid wearing red, white, and blue. These colors are also shared by the gobblers;  #5. Use gobbler calls only to locate a tom, not to attract one. Some other hunter might think you’re a turkey;  #6. Keep your hands and face camouflaged when calling;  #7. Never carry or move an uncovered turkey.

President Trump’s decision to be the first President in three decades to speak at the annual NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION convention is drawing heat from two Anti-Gun groups that now plan to travel to Atlanta to disrupt the massive event. ( Editor’s note: Rumors has it that Bloomberg is funding all the travel of those coming with his $25 million Dollar bounty to fight the NRA. ) GUN-CONTROL GROUPS VOW DEMONSTRATION AT TRUMP’S SPEECH TO NRA later this month. (Editor’s note: My son, Bill Gamble and I attended the NRA convention last year in Louisville, and they had over 300 Secret Service officers for two weeks before Trump and other government officials appeared, plus the locals had over 500 officers there for the four days. Snipers on the roof lines, armed copters flying overhead, and it took me almost 2 hours to go through the metal detectors and pat downs. It was something I will never forget. Maybe the protestors need a waking up, baseball bats work good according to Pres. Teddy Roosevelt.) OREGON ACTION NEEDED: Committee Vote on Anti-Gun Amendment is Imminent;  ALABAMA: Senate to vote on Permitless carry legislation;  ARIZONA HOUSE: Advances private transfer preemption bill;  CHICAGO: Reluctant aldermen relax rules governing shooting ranges, provided operators obtain a special-use permit from the Zoning Board of Appeals.  WEST VIRGINIA: Range Protection Bill signed by Governor;  FLORIDA:  Anti-Gun Advocates working to change Florida’s Constitution;  OREGON:  Anti-Gun Bills no longer scheduled for a Vote today (4-19-2017).  NOTE: If you are not a member of the NRA yet, they are running a special deal for all membership ranges. Life memberships use to be $1,500, but for a few weeks they lower the price to only $600, and that is a great saving!  Please if you believe that your Constitutional Rights are not under attack, you are so badly mistaken. Sign up your grandchildren, wife and anyone else you can. The Anti-Gun groups have stepped up their fight against the Constitution and remember, the Liberals want you to be a subject of the government, not a citizen of the government.

FISHING NEWS:  EXPANDED FISHING ON LAKE MICHIGAN SET TO TAKE EFFECT APRIL 15th;   Starting Saturday April 15th Lake Trout harvest will take effect thanks to an emergency rule approved by the Wis. DNR Board.  The rule takes into account current lake trout populations including the reestablishment of natural reproduction in some refuge areas and is not expected to affect long-term restoration efforts. The new 5 fish daily bag limit was developed following an extensive angler engagement process that included seven public meetings with total attendance of 500. Other provisions of the new rule are:  Count the 5 fish daily lake trout limit as part of the overall five trout and salmon combined daily bag limit; Maintain closure of refuges, which are supporting some natural reproduction; Offer a continuous open season in 2017; Maintain the commitment to lake-wide lake trout restoration and promotion of a diverse salmon and trout fishery through continued assessment of lake trout restoration goals and management actions. DNR will hold a combined public hearing to the emergency rule and gather additional information for a permanent rule at a hearing set for June 22 from 6 to 8 pm in the ballroom at U-W Milwaukee’s School of Freshwater Sciences, 600 E. Greenfield Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53204. Written comments can be sent to:  DNRLAKEMICHIGANPLAN@wisconsin.gov  or mailed to: Brad Eggold, DNR, Great Lakes Water Institute, 600 E. Greenfield Ave., Milwaukee, WI  53204. The deadline for comments is July 17, 2017.  The initial emergency rule will run 150 days with two expected 60 day extensions for a total of 270 days. For 2017, the new bag limit will therefore be in effect until December 31, 2017. The department intends to seek a permanent rule that would take effect as soon as possible upon expiration of the emergency rule extensions.

Walleye runs continuing on rivers and fishing pressure has been very heavy at some locations, including at the Hattie Street dam on the Menominee River and at Voyager Park on the Fox River where it was shoulder to shoulder angler wading near shore over the week. On the Wolf River walleye are starting to make it up to the Shawano Dam. Anglers reported catching mostly males but with more females starting to show up with many not spawned out yet. Sturgeons have not been spotted below the Shawano Dam yet, but with the warmer weather it will not be long before they arrive to spawn. The steelhead run on Lake Michigan tributaries continues to be a mixed bag. The Kewaunee River is still producing some steelhead and steelhead were moving up the Ahnapee River with good catches just downstream of the Forestville Dam. Some small brown trout and a few bigger steelhead were taken from the East Twin River. Not much pressure on fishing so far this week on the West Twin River the number of times it was checked. Steelhead fishing farther south of Manitowoc are reporting just about the same of the local fishing in the Mishicot and Shoto areas. Smelt fishermen were reporting good catches of up to 300 smelt per night along the Milwaukee shoreline.

If you would like to report any fishing experiences you are having locally in the Manitowoc or Two Rivers areas, or if you are a hardcore fisherman or woman, drop us an email at: roger@VLoutdoormedia.com, and we will be sure to place it on the CUB Radio blog site, and the http://VLoutdoormedia.com  site.  This also applies for all hunting, club news or anything that the public might be interested in.

OUTDOOR NEWS:   NRA-ILA GRASSROOTS VOL. 24, #14:   FREEDOM WINS!!!  Pro-Second Amendment Judge will join the U.S. Supreme Court. “The NRA would like to thank President Trump for fulfilling his campaign promise to place a Pro-Second Amendment justice on the Supreme Court.”  Judge Neal Gorsuch appointment being confirmed by the Senate on Friday is a wonderful thing for the Constitution and all Constitutional Rights. ( Writer’s Note:  “Thank you Senators who voted for the only true Constitution Judge ever picked. I will remind all citizens of those Liberal Senators who continually turned against those individuals who live and breathe the Second Amendment and the Rights of it. Senator Bladwin, your days in the Senate are now counting down to having to get a real job in life. I will work my butt off to get rid of you and your liberal views.”)   WEST VIRGINIA: West Virginia Congressman introduces important Pro-Gun Legislation; CANADIAN Gun Controllers adopt misleading tactic on Children and Firearms, they are willing to use misleading statistics on childhood firearm-related injuries to advance an anti-gun agenda; FIREARM PURCHASES STILL TRENDING UP, but our national salesman of the year is now gone (Obama) and everyone is feeling like there is no problems like before. ( Wrong-because of the liberal judge that person placed on the lower court benches, we still are in trouble about our Second Amendment Rights being attacked every day.) Do not forget about the upcoming NRA Annual Meetings and Exhibits in Atlanta, GA. If you have the time and money to travel to Atlanta, you will not be disappointed at the meetings. Also, the exhibit hall with the many thousands of guns and displays will keep you busy all day long. It a great place to take the children too also. Attend Firearms Law Seminar will be held on Friday April 28th, 2017 at the Annual meetings. It’s the gold standard in firearm law classes, this day-long seminar provides legal instruction for attorneys and all others interested in Second Amendment law. CLE credit for all state is available. If you can’t attend the Annual Meetings, it should be on You Tube after the meetings which end on April 30th. Watch for it, it will be a good show to watch. FISHNG NEWS:  Had an opportunity to see fishermen on the rivers up at New London and I really was surprised of the number of boats on the waters. Not a lot of luck according to their reports but they keep on fishing. On the Fox River from State Hwy 172 in Green Bay up to the Dam in De Pere, the river was loaded with boats and fishermen along the shoreline. Some nice size walleyes were being taken, but from what I could see, lots of catch and release right now. The East and West Twin Rivers have been seeing a lot of fishermen from all over the State.

ATTENTION all fishermen of the East Twin River in Mishicot. Remember that on April 18th through April 27th, the U S Fish & Game will be placing lampricides to control the lamprey in our river. The river right now has lamprey larvae present and they need to control them before they grow up to be full size lamprey. If this infestation is left untreated, it will have a detrimental effect upon fish populations that inhabit the Great Lakes.

OUTDOOR NEWS:  The Statewide Youth Turkey Hunt is the weekend of April 15 and 16 which is just a week away. Turkeys have moved out of their overwinter flocks with a few Toms already displaying in the fields. Shed hunters are out and about and the elk will soon be shedding antlers as well. Migration continues strong across the state. Large flocks of birds of all species have been traveling through the state on their way to their nesting areas. As you drive around the county, you will see flocks or pairs of geese and sandhill cranes in the fields. A word of caution to all drivers, this week on one night I had 7 deer cross in front of me as I was driving to the sportsmen club meetings. I had 4 try to run down my van and on the way home again, I had three more try the same thing. Funny to mention this, these deer were on the normal trails where they are during hunting season. So please drive very carefully this spring, no one wants to hit any animals with their vehicle.

Mark your calendars for April 23rd as the Friends of the Branch River would like to invite all of you to the Manitowoc Public Library at 12:30pm. They will be hosting the Fox Valley Herp Club upstairs in the Balkansky Rooms B and C. The group will do a short presentation on reptiles and then the fun starts with lots of hands-on interaction with the many snakes, turtles and other reptiles big and small. There will also be some treats from the Cravings in Whitelaw afterwards. This is a FREE FAMILY EVENT, but donations are strongly encouraged to help support the group. They will also have information about getting involved in the group and/or becoming a member. This organization is all about getting the whole family involved and the things they have for the children to do is just wonderful. They are also offering a summer camp scholarship to 12-17 year olds through Maritime Museum – Watershed Ambassadors Summer Camp. This requires a membership and some volunteer work with us. The week-long camp is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys the outdoors. Do not forget to support this group by attending their April 29th Brat Fry at Rob’s Market on Menasha Ave. next to the Airport and it should be starting around 9:30 till after noon hour sometime. This is one of their ways to raise the so badly needed money to run a program for children and the group. For more information about the group, feel free to call Al Klingeisen at 920-901-5166 or the group’s secretary Emily Endter at 920-323-3486.

FISHING NEWS:   The spring Walleye runs are picking up on the rivers. Even with some spots in Northern Wis. still having ice on the lakes, it is rotting and turning black and should be considered very dangerous with anglers falling through the ice in some counties. The Walleye run is picking up in the Peshitgo, Menominee and Wolf rivers and fishermen are flocking to the shores of the peak run. Fishing in the Wis. River had been good this past week with the walleyes just about at spawn stage and numerous fish being caught below the dams. There are a few sturgeon on the Wolf River, but the water temperatures are still too cold for their annual spawning run. By the way, the Wis. DNR is looking for individuals who are willing to babysit the sturgeon during their spawning runs. Contact the DNR service offices to ask about being a sturgeon watcher, as I did that for many years and it’s fun to watch them at all hours of the day and night. Fishing in the Door County area is improving as the spring temps warm the area. On the Bay side of the county, there is still some spots with ice in the harbors, but the Sawyer Harbor ramp was open and busy with most boats catching 2 or 3 browns.  Along the Lake Michigan shorelines the rivers are showing some signs of a mixed bag of steelheads. The Sheboygan River and the Kewaunee County streams have been producing a few steelheads and the occasional brown trout. Fishing pressure on the Milwaukee, Menomonee and Root Rivers was lower this past week but the pressure on the Oak Creek was heavy with some nice catches of rainbows landed. Fishing in that Oak Creek area is really good for browns also at this time of the season. East and West Twin Rivers have had a few fishermen trying their luck on the steelhead and I have seen only a few fish caught. Hopefully this coming week will be good with the weather warming up the water a bit.

NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY  will be on September 23rd, 2017 this year. There should be events all around the state celebrating the NHF Day. Assn. will be celebrating their 110th Anniversary and is the leader in Conservation in these parts of the state and the Mid-West. PETA:  PETA is now claiming that “Milk is a symbol of White Supremacy.” PETA’S shenanigans vary from the absurd to the downright offensive. PETA’s efforts to “save the animals” always make the headlines—and with good reason: they’re completely absurd. The Animal Rights group released a new video to cry over milk, equating the nutritious drink with NAZISM. “Did you know that milk has long been a symbol used by white supremacists”? It’s an alternative fact accompanied by equally ludicrous video, which they published on social media. They call milk the neo-Nazi drink of choice, stating that it has “long been” a symbol used by white supremacist groups as a “thinly veiled allegory for racial purity.  Read this in an email to me on April 2, 2017 from Liberty Headlines.
