Washington Post Writer Likens Bloomberg Gun Control Org to Productive Charities

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017
Washington Post Writer Likens Bloomberg Gun Control Org to Productive Charities
It is a small mercy that the Washington Post relegates Petula Dvorak’s column to the paper’s Metro section below the fold, preventing at least some readers from happening upon her insipid thoughts. According to a short biography offered by the Post, Dvorak’s areas of journalistic expertise include “homeless shelters, gun control, high heels, high school choirs, the politics of parenting, jails, abortion clinics, mayors, modern families, strip clubs and gas prices, among other things.” Perhaps Dvorak has some minor knack for hard-hitting reporting on women’s footwear and gentlemen’s clubs, but as her latest commentary shows, her forays into gun control politics lack the most basic competence.
Dvorak’s latest missive concerned the Giving Tuesday campaign, which is supposed to serve as a counterpoint to the consumption-oriented Black Friday and Cyber Monday and encourages charitable giving. Rather than simply highlighting worthy charities, Dvorak sought to pollute the public’s philanthropic impulse with partisan politics.
In a portion of her column titled, “Gun Violence,” Dvorak complained,
Gun ownership is growing in our violence-drenched nation. On Black Friday, the FBI reported a record 203,086 requests for background checks. That translates into a huge burst of gun sales on that major shopping day, which has become a growing tradition. Eight kids die every day from a gunshot wound in our country.
According to Dvorak, the remedy for the growth in law-abiding gun owners, and the NRA influence, is Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America (MDA). The author described MDA as,
a group working toward one goal: children’s safety. Whether it’s stricter gun laws or safety classes for responsible gun owners, this answer to the National Rifle Association is a growing presence that can use your support.
Since April 2014, MDA has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of Billionaire Michael Bloomberg’s anti-gun conglomerate Everytown. In this capacity, MDA supports all manner of gun control regardless of whether a given policy has any conceivable relation to “children’s safety.” To the credit of the Bloomberg front group, its own materials produced in opposition to legislation like the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act and Hearing Protection Act make little attempt concoct such a tenuous link.
Moreover, MDA does not offer “safety classes for responsible gun owners;” NRA does. Through a network of more than 125,000 Certified NRA Instructors, NRA helps to train more than 1 million people in the safe and effective use of firearms each year.
Since 1988, NRA has also educated children to avoid the potential dangers of firearms through the Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program. To date, the program has reached more than 30 million children. According to CDC data, there were 277 unintentional firearm deaths among those ages 0-14 in 1988, in 2015 there were 48.
MDA has denounced this vital safety program as some sort of malicious conspiracy. Even though Eddie Eagle instructs children that come across a firearm to “Stop! Don't touch. Run away. Tell a grown-up,”  MDA Founder Shannon Watts tweeted that the safety program is “a ploy to market guns to kids.” In another fevered tweet, Watts wrote, “Eddie Eagle is the tobacco industry's Joe Camel with feathers.”
Unlike Bloomberg’s gun control apparatus, NRA has a wide-ranging mission that goes well beyond pushing a legislative agenda. From gun safety instruction, to efforts to foster participation in the shooting sports, to programs that promote civic engagement, NRA is doing important work that benefits our members and others across the country. Giving Tuesday might be over, but those with a real interest in promoting the safe use of firearms can always go to http://www.friendsofnra.org/ to give or get involved.

Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Kardashian West Aren’t Entirely Against Guns, Just You Having Them

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017
Rosie O’Donnell and Kim Kardashian West Aren’t Entirely Against Guns, Just You Having Them
In the late 1990s and early 2000s no celebrity pushed gun control more than comedienne and actress Rosie O’Donnell. Longtime NRA supporters will remember the famous incident in 1999 where the arch-gun control supporter ambushed actor and NRA Board Member Tom Selleck on her now-defunct daytime talk show. O’Donnell was active with Handgun Control Inc. (now the Brady Campaign) and the Million Mom March, and signed a letter calling for the criminalization of private transfers of firearms, handgun waiting periods, handgun rationing, and a ban on commonly-owned semi-automatic firearms and their magazines.
Despite the severity of these restrictions, the so-called “Queen of Nice” explained that she would go even further during an interview with anti-gun former-U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthyO’Donnell remarked, “I know it's in the Constitution. But you know what? Enough! I would like to say, I think there should be a law--and I know this is extreme--that no one can have a gun in the U.S. If you have a gun, you go to jail.” There was even an Associated Press report that O’Donnell asked the cast of Broadway show “Annie Get Your Gun” to alter the lyrics to “Anything You Can Do” to remove the line “I can shoot a partridge with a single cartridge.”
However, during her most active years as gun control crusader, O’Donnell employed armed security guards. In 2000, the pro-gun community was quick to point out her hypocrisy when it was reported that a bodyguard O’Donnell employed to protect her son had applied for a concealed carry permit and that the star approved. O’Donnell’s hypocrisy was so galling that in 2001 a gun rights supporter instituted, and NRA republished, the tongue-in-cheek “Rosie’” Awards, which were “bestowed upon the most hypocritical enemies of the Second Amendment.”
Today, O’Donnell is still a vocal gun control supporter and still enjoys the protection firearms afford.
During a November appearance on The Howard Stern Show, O’Donnell shared a personal story about her girlfriend, who is a police officer in Worcester, Mass. According to the interview, the girlfriend was staying over one night when the couple was awakened at 3 a.m. by the home’s alarm system. O’Donnell bragged that her capable girlfriend sprung up from bed, gun in hand, and went to investigate. O’Donnell told Stern that her partner’s armed response was “the biggest turn-on I ever had in my life.”
Back in June, Kim Kardashian West took to her website to post an ignorant screed in support of Michael Bloomberg’s Everytown for Gun Safety and in opposition to legislation supported by NRA and the ACLU that protected those with disabilities from being improperly targeted as persons prohibited from possessing firearms. Kardashian West is also a member of Everytown’s celebrity outreach program, which the group calls its “Creative Council.”
In a recently released clip from the latest season of “reality” TV program Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kardashian West challenges her sisters Kendall and Khloe when they express an interest in firearm ownership for self-defense. While Khloe was explaining how their interest in gun ownership was spurred by Kendall’s concerns for her own safety, Kim interjected “Well that’s what you have security for.” Continuing to tow the Everytown line, Kardashian West went on to say that she would not permit her children to sleep over at her sister’s house were there a gun in the home.
Having grown up in the lap of luxury as the daughter of a high-profile businessman and attorney who was also the heir to a meat-packing fortune, Kardashian West has had little reason to concern herself with the travails of ordinary Americans. The socialite might be surprised to learn that the vast majority of her countrymen cannot retain a phalanx of armed guards.
The institutional gun control lobby has long used celebrity “influencers” in an attempt to shape gun policy; to little effect. As members of the same elitist clique, wealthy gun control advocates seem blind to the fact that the “deplorable” masses see right past this sort of celebrity moralizing to the underlying hypocrisy. The average American’s concerns for their own safety and that of their family are no less important than those of the rich and famous, and it should be obvious by now that no volume of celebrity lectures will convince them otherwise.

State Attorneys General Back National Reciprocity

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017
State Attorneys General Back National Reciprocity

AGs: Will not result in an increased risk of crime.

Fairfax, Va.—  Today, H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, gained support from a coalition of America’s highest-ranking law enforcement officers. Twenty-four* attorneys general from across the country signed a letter spearheaded by Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley supporting this common sense legislation.
The additional support for Concealed Carry Reciprocity follows House Judiciary Committee approval of H.R. 38.  A full House vote is expected soon.
“America’s highest-ranking law enforcement officers understand that law-abiding citizens should be able to exercise their fundamental right to self-defense while traveling across state lines without fear of unknowingly breaking the law. The NRA applauds these attorneys general for supporting this important legislation,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director, National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action.
The letter states that H.R. 38 is a much-needed solution to a problem facing gun owners and poses no threat to public safety.  “The exercise of Congress’s power is particularly warranted in this case because too many states refuse to allow law-abiding visitors to carry concealed firearms. These states leave people without any real option for self-defense. Allowing concealed carry across state lines will not result in an increased risk of crime, as those states that have reciprocal concealed-carry agreements have not encountered any significant safety issues.”
H.R. 38 would eliminate the confusing patchwork of state laws that make it difficult for law-abiding gun owners to travel across the country with their firearms for personal protection. The Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act affirms that law-abiding citizens who are qualified to carry concealed firearms in one state can carry in other states that allow residents to do so.
A copy of the letter signed by attorneys general from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma*, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming can be found here.
*Please note: an earlier version of this press release said 23 attorneys general and has since been updated with the recent addition of the Oklahoma attorney general who signed on after the original letter was posted.

Established in 1871, the National Rifle Association is America's oldest civil rights and sportsmen's group. More than five million members strong, NRA continues to uphold the Second Amendment and advocates enforcement of existing laws against violent offenders to reduce crime. The Association remains the nation's leader in firearm education and training for law-abiding gun owners, law enforcement and the armed services. U.S. House of Representatives to Vote on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, Next Week

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017
U.S. House of Representatives to Vote on H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, Next Week
In a huge win for Second Amendment supporters, the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday held a mark-up of H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act, and favorably reported an amended version of the billto the full House. Anti-gun Democrats on the Committee offered a lengthy list of amendments to weaken or gut the bill, all of which were defeated.

The last 30 years have seen a continual expansion of the right to carry concealed handguns for self-defense within the United States, even as the nationwide violent crime rate has plummeted during the same period.

Every U.S. state now has a legal mechanism whereby its residents may carry concealed handguns, and 42 states and the District of Columbia broadly recognize a right of law-abiding citizens to do so.

Ask Your U.S. Representative to Vote for H.R. 38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act

Please contact your U.S. Representative and ask him or her to vote YES on H.R.38, the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act of 2017. You can call the congressional switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to be connected to your representative's office.
The remaining eight states, however, treat the right to carry for self-defense as a privilege reserved for the elite, the connected, or those who can “prove” extraordinary circumstances to the licensing officials.
How this minority approach works in places like New York City, for example, is that movie stars such as Robert De Niro and Harvey Keitel can get permits, but a bus driver or waitress who wants to carry in his or her own high-crime neighborhood cannot, no matter how spotless the person’s background. It has also led to allegations of corruption, with “expediters” said to have paid licensing officials thousands of dollars to process permit applications for their clients – including those with histories of domestic violence – without any background checks whatsoever.
Needless to say, these states also refuse to recognize permits from other states or even, in some cases, to issue their own permits to otherwise eligible out-of-state residents.
Anti-gun members of the committee – most of whom have never met an exercise of federal authority they didn’t love – hypocritically tried to portray H.R. 38 as an attack on “states’ rights” and desperately tried to steer the debate to the differences between state licensing laws.

A majority of the committee, however, saw past the charade and recognized that what was really at stake was not the safety of residents in anti-gun states but whether upstanding Americans get to exercise their fundamental right to carry over the wishes of politicians who seek to deny it entirely.

Indeed, anti-gun committee members made many revealing arguments during the lengthy proceedings, displaying both their ignorance and their refusal to accept the bearing of arms as a constitutional right.

Multiple committee members began their attack on the bill by falsely claiming it would prevent police officers from doing their jobs, or even from verifying permits, and that the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) opposed it. When Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) corrected the record to explain the FOP does not, in fact, oppose the bill, the anti-gun members pivoted to the argument that groups representing the executive and political classes of law enforcement still did.

They were clearly stung, however, by the fact that the largest national organization of officers working the streets – the very same officers most directly impacted by the legislation – had no opposition to it. And when it comes to support by law enforcement executives, the anti-gun opponents of the bill were dealt another blow when 24 state attorneys general, the chief law-enforcement officers of their respective states, signed onto a letter in support of H.R. 38

Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL) – who rose through the ranks of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office from patrolman to captain – also offered an NRA-supported amendment to make clear what was already implicit in the bill’s language: officers may conduct constitutionally permissible investigative stops. That amendment was adopted by a voice vote, but the bill’s critics remained undeterred.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), one of the bill’s most vocal and animated opponents, offered a novel interpretation of the Supreme Court’s Heller decision. He allowed it protects the ownership of handguns for self-defense but insisted it only applies to rifles and shotguns used for “hunting” and “recreation.” Raskin denied, moreover, that the bill would protect any constitutional rights and even wasted the committee’s time by offering a childish amendment to change the Act’s short title to reflect his own view of its effect and purpose.
Another telling moment came when Rep. Darrell Issa (R-49) offered an amendment to include federal judges within the protection of the Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act, which since 2004 has allowed qualified active and retired law enforcement officers to carry concealed firearms interstate. Anti-gun committee members immediately launched attacks against the amendment, with their arguments devolving into thinly-veiled attacks on the character and reliability of the judiciary.

Ranking member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) elaborated at length on the supposed risks federal judges pose of drunk driving, domestic violence, and senility. Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) echoed his concerns, focusing on their potential for instability, domestic violence, and “abuse of dating partners.”

When Rep. Issa offered to clarify that the rule would apply only to judges who are not federally prohibited from receiving a firearm and explained that police officers are already covered by similar provisions, Nadler responded that he doesn’t agree with LEOSA as it applies to police officers, either.

A sizeable majority of the committee, however, apparently holds the federal judiciary in greater esteem than Nadler and Lofgren and voted to include them in LEOSA by a margin of 18-6.
Yet perhaps the most eye-popping claim came from none other than Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), who claimed, “if there is a domestic violence case, and there is a gun – 500% chance of there being a homicide.” Lest anybody think she misspoke, Lee repeated the assertion later in the hearing, “if it’s a domestic violence situation, and you have a gun, it’s a 500% chance it’ll end in homicide.”
While these gaffes may be humorous, the situation the bill seeks to prevent is not. Decent, law-abiding Americans – people like Brian Fletcher, Shaneen Allen, Raymond Hughes, Meredith Graves, Ryan Jerome, Jamie Kiklis – have been arrested and thrown into jail for innocent mistakes over concealed carry reciprocity. Other travelers who have been victims of violent attacks were rendered defenseless because of the prohibitive anti-gun laws in a small handful of states.

H.R. 38 simply seeks to shift the law to the side of those who obey the rules so they – and not just the criminals – can exercise what the U.S. Supreme Court called “the right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation” in any state where their travels may take them.
Consideration of the Concealed Carry Reciprocity Act by the full House will likely occur next week. Please contact your member of Congress using the Write Your Representatives feature of our website and respectfully urge him or her to vote “yes” on this vital legislation.  You can also call the U.S. Capitol Switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask to speak to your representative.
After years of sustained effort by your NRA to see national reciprocity become law, its passage may now be closer than ever.

DNR REPORT FOR DECEMBER 1st 2017

Outdoor Report

November 30, 2017

Another Wisconsin nine-day gun deer season is in the books, and preliminary registration numbers show a slight increase in statewide buck harvest, with 98,364 hunters successful in their pursuit of an antlered deer. Similar to 2016, northern counties again showed the most significant increases in both buck and antlerless harvest. Overall, preliminary figures show that 195,738 deer were registered down slightly from the 197,262 registered in 2016.
The gun deer season continued to show hunting as a safe recreational activity, as the season ended with seven hunting incidents and no hunting-related fatalities. None of these incidents involved mentored youth hunters.
The GameReg registration system worked well overall, with 62 percent of registrations completed online and 36 percent completed via telephone--while other hunters continued to visit walk-in stations that offer these services.
A muzzleloader season is now open through Dec. 6, and the archery season is open through Jan. 7. A four-day antlerless-only hunt will take place Dec. 7-10, while the holiday hunt will be offered in select counties from Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, 2018. Any legal firearm, crossbow or archery equipment may be used during these hunts.
While the nine-day hunt has ended, hunters are reminded to connect with DNR staff on social media through the department’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. Also, be sure to check out Wild Wisconsin - an all new web and podcast series focused on all things deer hunting. So far, more than 200,000 viewers have used the series to help prepare for deer season.
In the north, most of the snow that had fallen previously has melted with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Marshes, ponds, and shallow lakes have a half an inch to an inch thin layer of ice on top and in most areas Ice is not safe to go out and ice fish yet. For those open water anglers, musky season closes today Nov. 30.
Snowshoe hares and weasels have gotten their white winter coats in anticipation of blending in with the snow-covered landscape. However, they are very visible in the fallen leaves and underbrush of the brown woods and their lack of camouflage makes them easier targets for predators. Bears are denned up.
DNR is hearing concerns that people are getting too close to snowy owls, adding to the stress, and a number of them are already being brought into DNR offices with injuries or poor health and going to rehabbers. This owl was photographed at a distance with a telephoto lense. - Photo Credit: Reggie Gauger

Duck hunters are still having success on the Green Bay and other inland bodies of water. Pheasant stocking will resume on some state wildlife properties now that the regular gun deer season is over. And a reminder that the Dec. 10 deadline for spring turkey and bear permits is now just over a week away.
Wisconsin is experiencing a blizzard of snowy owls this year, with more than 100 found statewide since Oct. 20. Seeing one is a great thrill but remember to minimize stress on them by not approaching too closely. While the specific distance varies by situation, you are too close if the bird becomes alert, spends time watching you, and/or flushes from its perch. Learn more about finding and respectfully viewing snowy owls on the DNR website.
Flocks of snow buntings have also been reported. These plump songbirds possess lots of white in their plumage which when are in a flock suggests the image of a swirling snowstorm.

2018 Wisconsin State Park stickers are on sale Dec. 1 and make great gifts. Stickers are available at park and forest offices, all DNR service centers and by phone at 888-936-7463.
