DNR FISHING REPORT FOR MARCH 26, 2018, GET YOUR RODS READY!

Northern Lake Michigan Fishing Report: March 26, 2018

Kewaunee Co.

  • Kewaunee and Algoma Ramps – The beginning of last week saw the first use of the Kewaunee Landing. The Algoma Ramp was open all week. Fridays weather allowed for a couple boats to go out for Browns, with the best luck on chartreuse and orange color.
  • Kewaunee River – Steelhead were caught consistently along the Kewaunee River. The catch was especially good under the Bruemmer Park Bridge off the south side with the best luck using wax worms.
  • Kewaunee River – The ice chunks have cleared out at Ox’s Bend near Bruemmer Zoo though the walk there could use some sun.
  • Ahnapee River – Late in the week a strong east wind brought anglers up and down the Ahnapee River. Brown trout catches were mostly by the rapids on the west side of the Washington Road Bridge. Water was high near Blahnik Park.
  • Stoney Creek – Stoney Creek fishing was nonexistent because of ice cover, but is expected to defrost in the upcoming week.

Green Bay Fishing Report: March 26, 2018

Important updates

  • The Coast Guard ice breaker Mobile Bay out of Sturgeon Bay made its way through Green Bay mid-week, cutting a trail the entire length of the bay as well as to Sturgeon Bay and Menominee. Despite this ice conditions on the east shore have remained very stable. With a lack of wind and cold temperatures at night, the ice seems to be holding well. A layer of snow on the ice also helps reflect sunlight, reducing the effects of the sunny 40-degree days we’ve been having. Ramps are deteriorating but anglers are still parking trucks on the ice in many places. As always, check the forecast before venturing out past major cracks. Since the cutter went through, ice sheets are more able to shift with changing wind conditions.
  • Remember: No ice is ever safe ice. Ice conditions can vary rapidly. Just because you see other people out does not mean the ice is safe between you and them. Always check ice conditions often when venturing out on the ice.

Green Bay East Shore Ice Fishing Report

  • There has been some good fishing for anglers still getting out on the ice over the last week. The whitefish bite is still good. Most anglers are targeting near shore areas often fishing cracks and hopping holes. The most fishing pressure has been from Sugar Creek North to Henderson Point but whitefish can be caught at most places along the east shore. Walleye action has been picking up. Many anglers have had their fill of whitefish and are now targeting walleye. Some anglers are reporting catching a walleye while targeting whitefish and walleye anglers have had success in the evening. On the east end of the Sturgeon Bay Canal a few anglers are still trying their luck with tip ups for pike. This has produced some big fish recently but be careful as ice around the shipping canal is deteriorating daily and very inconsistent. Ice conditions from Henderson’s Point south to Volks landing remain decent with many places still holding ice over 20” thick. However cracks are moving and thin patches can develop so tread with caution.
  • Remember: No ice is ever safe ice. Ice conditions can vary rapidly. Just because you see other people out does not mean the ice is safe between you and them. Always check ice conditions often when venturing out on the ice.
