Roger's Outdoor Notes

FISHING NEWS:   With fishermen going onto the ice lately, over the weekend some asked what is a safe thickness to go onto the ice. Here are some facts from the MINN. DNR and the Old Farmer’s Almanac3” to 4” safe for a single person to WALK onto the ice.  5” is good for a snowmobile or ATV, 7 ½” to 8” is god for a car or small pickup, 8” to 12” for a small truck (2 ½ ton gross) and 12” to 15” for a medium truck. Remember, these lakes around here have springs in them, so the ice depth can change within a few feet if near a spring. If you have questions, check with the local bait shops and/or contact other fishermen who have been out on the ice already. No fish is worth your life or those you love. Susie Q Fish Market will get you the type of fish if you really need it. Please be safe on the ice.
