Attention Winnebago System Sturgeon Enthusiasts:
As expected, today was the first big day of tagging sturgeon at the Shawano
Dam. We had two crews working below the dam and were able to handle 291 fish.
Today’s catch was one of the lower catches over the last decade for a full day
of working at the dam. There certainly are a lot of fish present there, but
with the high water a lot of fish are spawning in deeper water and not easily
catchable with our dip nets. This has been an issue at other locations that we
have worked this spring as well.
Every year we collect eggs from about 12-15 females while we are working at
Shawano. These eggs are reared at various hatcheries around the country and are
stocked into a number of waterbodies both in Wisconsin and other states.
Despite the lower catch today, we filled all the egg requests.
The 2018 sturgeon spawning run is starting to wind down. Shawano provides
the best bet to see fish spawning tomorrow, but the run may not go on much
longer than that.
We are committed to service excellence.
