SPORT FISHING REPORTS FROM THE DNR OF MAY 31, 2018

Manitowoc Co.

  • Manitowoc Ramp – Anglers are still catching a brown trout periodically. Depths that brown trout were found in ranged from 35 ft to 80 ft, with fish being caught on green and Silver spoons. No reports of Cohos yet, although they should start to show up with this warmer weather.
  • Manitowoc Harbor & Piers – Fishing pressure has been low with very few fish to show. The alewives are still in the harbor and around the piers. Northern Pike fishing has been decent right in the harbor over the past week with fish being caught on variety of baits. Throwing spoons seemed like the best method. Some anglers are still trying for catfish with little results.
  • Two Rivers Ramp – Few anglers have tired their hands at going for Cohos and kings with no success. It seems like Lake Trout are about the only fish that have been caught on a regular basis. With most of those fish being caught up by the Two Creeks power plant. Water temps are in and around 46-49 degrees.
  • Two Rivers Harbor & Piers – Fishing pressure was low. Northern pike have been caught once and a while throughout the week. Fire tiger spoons are doing well. Many of the salmon will begin to appear south and move north as the season progresses. King salmon were spotted in Two Rivers, Lake Trout in Kewaunee, and some more Coho in Port Washington. Morning shore water temperatures (30-50ft deep) were reported at 50-52F. The deeper waters held 48F, while in the afternoon the shore temps could reach as high as 60F.
  • Kewaunee Shore & Piers – There was very little action overall the last week.
  • Algoma Ramp – The ramp was empty early week with many anglers choosing Door County after getting skunked. The waters were fairly calm with warm temperatures mid and late week.
  • Algoma Shoreline and Pier – The shore was empty early week. Folks have begun to fish for crappie. Many are waiting for perch season to open.

Door County (Lake Michigan Shore)

  • There has been almost no fishing pressure in Gills Rock but bass can be seen cruising the marina. Rowleys Bay was packed with bass fishermen over the weekend and most did well catching 30+ bass in Rowleys Bay and up the Mink River. Bass are on beds in the Mink and starting to get on the beds around the bay. Water temps have been holding in the upper 50’s to lower 60’s. Little to no fishing pressure out of Baileys Harbor over the weekend since the marina is being dredged and salmon action has not picked up yet.

Green Bay Fishing Report: May 29, 2018

Green Bay/Fox River

  • Metro Boat Launch - At the beginning of the week most of the effort was placed towards trolling for walleyes with all boats catching a few fish. Most boats harvested at least 3 fish with many catching limits. Anglers are starting to transition over to crawler harnesses but flicker shad/minnow are still proving successful for some. As the week progressed and the water warmed more bow fishermen took to the water in search of carp. The average boat shot between 30-40 fish for 4 hours on the water. By Saturday the lot was near full of pleasure boaters and Muskie anglers hitting the water. Many in search of the fish of 10,000 casts came home with their nets never touching the water. Out of all the interviews only one boat caught a fish out of metro.
  • Fox Point - Very few anglers out during the week with no interviews taking place. Over the weekend muskies became the fish of choice for anglers. Despite the effort only two fish were caught. The lot was near full with either muskies anglers or pleasure boaters the entire holiday weekend.
  • Brown County Fairgrounds - There were a few trailers in the lot over the past week but no anglers were interviewed. Over the weekend the parking lot was full but only pleasure boaters were observed.
  • Voyager Park - During the week there were a few people fishing from shore but no interviews were taken. Voyager was closed for celebrate De Pere over the weekend.

Green Bay East Shore

  • Brown County - Most boaters at Bayshore are harvesting their limit of walleyes or close to it, with most groups of anglers (2-3 people) catching around 20 walleyes total from sunrise to 1:00pm. Many fish that are being caught have been undersize for harvesting but those that are being harvested are mid-teens to low twenties. Most fish were caught using flicker shad/minnow. Shore anglers were catching very few fish but did catch a few northern pike. With it being memorial weekend and beautiful weather, the lot was at capacity.
  • Door County – Memorial Day weekend was busy with many anglers out in search of smallmouth. Action from shore was decent with most anglers catching a few bass on worms or small plastics. Most all piers and marinas are producing fish. Anderson Pier in Ephraim is the most popular. Most fish seem to be the small males moving in to find a nesting site. The ramps have been busy as well. The parking lots at Egg Harbor, Nicolet Bay and Sister Bay ramps were full on Saturday and Sunday, the majority being bass anglers. Most are doing well catching 25+ bass per outing. The bass are still in prespawn patterns in most areas with a few reports of bedded bass in some warmer areas. Water temps range from the low 50’s to low 60’s depending on wind direction and location.

Sturgeon Bay

  • Little Sturgeon - Bass fishing has been increasingly getting better with many anglers catching in the upwards of 20 bass. Most anglers said they hit best in the early morning and quit biting shortly after 10am. A few walleye and muskellunge boaters were out but all were unsuccessful. The lot was full this weekend due to the long weekend and hot weather resulting in very few parking spots left even in overflow parking.
  • Sawyer Harbor - Similar to Little Sturgeon the bass bite has been getting better but fewer fish were caught. Many anglers had stated that they saw plenty in the shallows but were uninterested in biting. Those that were successful in catching some bass were using tubes to get them to hit. No interviews were taken of walleye anglers. Those that were shore fishing were unsuccessful.
  • Sturgeon Bay Ramp – Light fishing pressure was had early in the week, but by late weekend pressure picked up leading to a full lot most days. Folks were out catching walleye with water temperatures reported at 50-52F. Winds calmed down mid-week with the water closer to 60F and as high as 70F in some places with the weekend’s heat wave.
  • Sturgeon Bay Piers – The pier was pretty windy in general. Great visibility was had some days with clear sight of large schools of minnows and the occasional carp. Fog was picking up heavier in this area.
  • Sunset Park – The Sunset Ramp was an easier place to launch due to the small amount of traffic and fishing pressure. The area was also significantly less windy compared to the Stone Quarry area.
  • Stone Quarry – The quarry ramp held high pressure most of the week and into the weekend. Folks were catching loads of smallmouth bass, walleye, and the occasional northern pike and whitefish. Water temps were 56-60 mid-week. Visiting anglers kept the shore busy with high turnover of anglers. Good luck was had on smallmouth bass for folks casting swim baits or live minnows. Friday was windy.
