Wisconsin S3DA Holds State 3-D and Outdoor Target Championship
Williamsburg, KY – Wisconsin S3DA held their 3-D and Outdoor Target Championship in conjunction with the Pope & Young Club’s Bowhunters Rendezvous at the MacKenzie Center in Poynette, Wisconsin. The MacKenzie Outdoor Education Center is located on 500 acres near Poynette, Wisconsin. 49 S3DA archers participated in the Outdoor Target round and 69 archers participated in the 3-D round from 5 different Wisconsin clubs. The Bowhunters Rendezvous was open to the public, so there were a lot of spectators on hand. Several hundred people attended the event, while more than 100 spectators stayed to watch the Wisconsin S3DA student archers.
On the 3-D side of the tournament, archers shot twenty life-like targets for scoring and then the top five in each division participated in a “shoot-off” in front of the crowd at the end of the day. For the Outdoor Target Championship, archers shot a marked yardage range at a “bulls-eye” style target at distances determined by their age and equipment. Archers shot six rounds of six arrows for scoring, then additional head-to-head shoot-off rounds to determine overall winners in each division.
“Wisconsin DNR is a proud partner of these events,” said Wisconsin DNR Secretary Dan Meyer. “Programs such as these are a great way to introduce youngsters to the outdoors. The important thing is that kids are developing an appreciation for outdoor recreation of all types.”
Blazin Arrows S3DA Club coach Sam Mallmann said, “The S3DA State Championship was a lot of fun for me and my daughter Lanie Mallmann. My daughter had a wonderful time at the event and really enjoyed seeing all the different events/vendors that were there. Thank you to the Pope & Young organization, as this event ranked at the top of my list as a well-planned archery shoot for all ages and disciplines of archery”.
A Kenosha Rangers parent stated, “This was our first outdoor archery event, and everyone made us feel at home. This is a great organization with great people.”
“The Wisconsin S3DA State Championship was a huge success. It was great to see the archers and families interact with the vendors at the Pope and Young Rendezvous! The competition was intense on both the Outdoor Target rounds and the 3-D course, especially during the shoot downs as there was several first-time state champions. We look forward to continued growth and building our relationship with the many sponsors of the event,” stated Wisconsin State Coordinator, Dan Schroeder.

Started in December 2012 by the Scholastic Archery Association, S3DA has grown exponentially as a next step program to follow introductory programs offered as part of 4-H or the National Archery in Schools Program.  S3DA addresses the need for a program to bridge beginning target archery experience and more advanced activities such as 3-D shooting and bowhunting. The program currently operates across the United States with hundreds of certified coaches serving
thousands of young archers, grades 3–12.
