We're out a couple days early
this year, with July 1st falling on a Sunday, we're hoping to catch your
attention before everyone takes a break for the weekend, or
longer, with Independence Day coming along next week. Thanks for taking a
moment to read this update about all things WWA!
Thanks to all the volunteers
who helped out at our June outreach events: the Conservation Calendar drawing
on the 13th, the Madison Scramble back on the 19th, and the Waukesha Sporting
Clays Shoot last Sunday - your efforts are much appreciated! As we move into
July, we've got several events to look forward to, with the return of the Ozaukee
County Sporting Clays Shoot on Sunday the 15th, the 8th
annual Abrams Sporting Clays Shoot presented by NEW Wall Street of Green Bay,
moving to J&H Game Farm, on Saturday, the 21st, and then finally the 8th annual Fox
Valley Scramble, presented by Financial Consulting Services, Inc. of Green
Bay, finishing out our month on Wednesday the 25th. Three great examples
to celebrate and support WWA missions, while enjoying the great outdoors -
that sounds like a good way to spend a summer's day in Wisconsin, doesn't
it?!
Quickly following those events
will be our 3rd annual Wausau dinner
event on the 4th of August, and then we go into a really busy
week, with Waterfowl Weekend
coming together at Cabela's in Richfield for the 10th-11th-12th, with the
return of the Decoy
Carving Contest & Exhibition and the WI
State Duck & Goose Calling Championships, coming together for several
really great days of celebrating our waterfowl hunting traditions!
I've been accused of looking
to far forward (to fall, winter, etc.) during these times, so I won't
foreshadow any further, but I also expect we'll see the return of the 2019
Conservation Calendar (the 10th anniversary edition - wow!) during this month, as well. Speaking of great raffles:
don't delay, get your Chevy Heaven - Great
Huntin' Truck Raffle tickets today: we're down to about 60 days before
that one will get drawn, along with a bunch of other cool stuff, at our Hunters' Eve Bash,
on August 30th - the Thursday before Labor Day weekend.
Ah, there I go again, wishing for fall. I'd better stop!
Please consider registering
for one of our upcoming events, occurring near
you! I'm certain you'll have a great time, and help support your Association,
as you do. A happy Independence Day holiday to all of us.

Bureau of Law Enforcement Policy Officer
Your question answered: Concealed weapon and waterfowl hunting
Editor's Note: This month's
entry from the Wis. DNR Bureau of Law Enforcement answers a question from a
Wis. Waterfowl Association member about the concealed weapon law and
waterfowl hunting. Keep those questions coming to the Bureau of Law
Enforcement's Public Information Officer, Joanne Haas, Joanne.Haas@wisconsin.gov,
or you can text her at 608-209-8147.)
For the folks out there who
are lawfully authorized to carry a concealed weapon in Wisconsin (e.g. CCW
license from WI Dept. of Justice), a common question is how that
authorization squares with the waterfowl hunting regulations.
In short, individuals who
carry a loaded and concealed handgun in compliance with all the concealed
carry rules are generally permitted to continue doing so while they engage in
duck hunting, so long as they are not using, or attempting to use, the
handgun for actually hunting any waterfowl. Wisconsin's migratory bird
hunting regulations prohibit the use of handguns for hunting waterfowl, and
also require all shotshells in a waterfowl hunter's possession to be
non-toxic. Lawfully possessed loaded handguns, not used to shoot at waterfowl,
are compliant with both of those principle restrictions.
For more information on
concealed weapons regulations, consult the Wisconsin Dept. of Justice
website, keyword "concealed carry."
